Early Sunday morning, Palestinian terrorists operating out of the Gaza Strip fired mortar shells at southern Israel. Code Red sirens were triggered in the region, sending residents to take cover in nearby bomb shelters.

The shells landed in an open area in the Eshkol region in the western Negev desert. No injuries, casualties, or damages were reported.

After almost a year of calm, Israel has seen a surge in violence emanating from terrorist factions operating out of the Gaza Strip. Terrorist cells associated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad have claimed responsibility for numerous rocket and sniper attacks against Israel.

On Thursday afternoon, terrorists fired mortar shells towards IDF forces patrolling the security fence between Israel and Gaza. Soldiers returned fire in the direction from which the mortars were fired.

On Wednesday, terrorist snipers shot at IDF soldiers stationed near the security fence located near the community of Kissufim.

In related news, an Israeli border police officer was wounded late Friday evening when Palestinians rioting near the border fence north of Jerusalem attacked IDF soldiers with firebombs and stones. The attack occurred near the town of Beitunia. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.
