AquaShield: Protecting Israel’s Maritime Border

After Hamas terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel via an amphibious landing from the sea, the thwarted terror attacks underlined the need to continually maintain security across Israel’s shoreline, stretching hundreds of kilometers on the Mediterranean sea.

The answer has come from Israeli defense technology firm DSIT Solutions. DSIT has developed a new sonar and electronic detection system designed to protect all forms of maritime assets which include beaches, bays, ports, ocean-based installations (like oil rigs), piers, and maritime energy terminals, of which Israel has more than a few.

With the recent maritime gas field discoveries and drilling platforms currently under construction in the Mediterranean, coupled with the now frequent incursions by Hamas, Israel’s need to protect its waters has never been greater.

DSIT announced recently the introduction of a new system called ‘AquaShield Extended Range (ER) Swimmer Delivery Vehicle Detection Sonar (SDS)’ to its product line at the Undersea Defense Technology conference in June.

The AquaShield ER was developed based on the best-seller AquaShield DDS (Diver Detection Sonar) which is widely used around the world to protect naval, commercial and energy sites and assets from underwater intrusion and sabotage.

The AquaShield ER was created by DSIT in response to technological advances associated with high speed vehicles that can deliver combatants via the sea to attack points on the coast.  Due to the high speed of the vehicles, which are faster than the standard combat diver, the available response time is significantly decreased, and therefore a new type of sonar detection system was needed.

The AquaShield ER offers unprecedented detection ranges against all marine threats. The AquaShield ER passed rigorous sea trials achieving detection ranges of up to 3.5 kilometer for Swimmer Delivery Vehicle targets, 1.8 kilometers for Open Circuit Divers and 1.2 kilometers for divers using closed-circuit apparatus.

DSIT has confirmed that its technology is being used by the Israeli Navy but did not comment on whether the technology was being used to foil incursions.

Dan Ben-Dov, DSIT’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing said, “We have been selling our AquaShield DDS system since 2007, but the AquaShield ER is a game changer in the field of underwater detection providing Israel with the detection and alarm ranges that they have needed for many years. DSIT has made considerable investment in developing this unique application.”

DSIT’s CEO, Benny Sela, added, “As technology advances we see a broader range of potential underwater threats, including SDVs and Midget Submarines, to coastal and offshore critical assets. We believe the AquaShield ER is the best solution to counter these threats. The benefit is not based only on the system’s remarkable detection ranges but also on the low cost per square meter of coverage. We greatly value our good working relations with the Israeli Navy, which has been an important source of feedback regarding their operation of our systems, and are proud to be a vital element in their advanced security framework. ”
