It would seem even petty criminals feel safer close to home during war.  Police in Israel are reporting a 10 percent drop in new criminal cases during Operation Protective Edge.

The numbers reflect an improvement over the same time last year, as well as over the period immediately preceding the operation.  With respect to specific crimes, property-related incidents were down 20 percent, home break-ins and car thefts were down 30 percent, and theft of property from parked vehicles was down a whopping 40 percent.

According to The Jerusalem Post, police began tracking these trends June 12, the day Gilad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel and Eyal Yifrah were kidnapped.

Israeli police are tasked with a number of responsibilities impacted by the current tensions, including maintaining public order and managing public safety.

Due to heightened tensions during the operation, local police and Border Patrol officers were deployed throughout the country in increased numbers and for 12-hour shifts.  Additionally, five companies of Border Patrol reservists were called up and more than 1,000 police cadets and 2,000 police volunteers took part in keeping the peace.

Over the past eight weeks of Operation Protective Edge, they have contended with disruptions of the public order and hostile activities, investigating potential incitement, and answering more than 800,000 some phone calls to emergency 100 hotlines, especially in southern Israel.

The Border Police alone have dealt with 567 incidents of stone throwing at police officers, 136 incidents of thrown firebombs, 25 thwarted improvised explosives and nine shooting attacks on police officers.
