The biblical city of the patriarchs, Hebron, was the scene of some pretty heavy clashes last week, as Palestinians rioted against the continued conflict in Gaza.

Palestinian Authority policemen fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Palestinian demonstrators protesting against Israel on Friday. Witnesses told the press that several were injured mostly due to gas inhalation.

PA policemen prevented the protesters from marching on IDF outposts and attacking Jewish homes. The police were met with shouts of “collaborators” and “spies” from the enraged crowd.

The protest came after calls by Hamas encouraging Palestinian uprisings in Judea and Samaria. Hamas called for Palestinian supporters to take to the streets following Friday morning prayers to protest against the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier on Friday, the IDF clashed with Palestinian activists in Hebron during a routine patrol outside the Policeman’s Checkpoint in the city, where a Molotov cocktail thrown by Palestinians struck the checkpoint, causing it to burst into flames. The fire-bomb caused structural damage to the checkpoint but no injuries were reported.

The checkpoint is a Palestinian pedestrian crossing between the section of the city that is under Israeli military and civil control and the areas of the city that are controlled by the PA.

The busy commercial streets located just outside the checkpoint on the Palestinian side are often a flashpoint for violence between Palestinians and IDF soldiers who patrol the area. Soldiers responded to the Molotov cocktail with warning shots fired in the general direction of the activists.

Additionally Ma’an News Agency reported that the IDF detained a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council on Friday in Hebron. In a raid on the home of Ahmad Moussa al-Zaarir, 52, the IDF detained him after searching his property for illegally possessed weapons or bombs.

As of the beginning of August, 34 Palestinian MPs are being held in detention by Israel, 23 of whom had been arrested in a large-scale search of Judea and Samaria following the kidnapping of Naftali Frenkel, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Eyal Yifrach 16.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum heavily condemned the PA security forces for breaking up the Hebron demonstration, calling the dispersal a “disgraceful and disrespectful” act designed to serve Israel, Israeli news source Ynet reported.

According to Palestinian news channel Wattan, protesters were shouting slogans denouncing Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sissi and the Egyptian stance in the conflict, accusing it of serving Israel. Other demonstrators, including children, were holding cardboard models of rockets.
