An Israeli man and an Uzbek woman were arrested by security officials at Ben Gurion Airport on Monday after bullets and drugs hidden inside toys in their luggage were discovered.

The items were uncovered by airport officials when their carry-on and check in luggage were searched prior to boarding a flight to Uzbekistan.

According to police, the 36-year-old man was found with a doll stuffed with bullets and narcotics in his luggage bound for Air Uzbekistan flight 302. Upon realizing that the illegal contents of the doll had been discovered, the man fled from airport security officials but was apprehended by guards within minutes.

Under questioning, the man said he was unaware of the contents hidden within the dolls. He said he was carrying the doll as a favor for a fellow female passenger who he had never met before. The woman told him that she had reached her weight limit for her luggage and did not want to get rid of the doll.

The man’s explanation prompted officials to re-examine all luggage on the flight. They uncovered more weapons and narcotics hidden in toys and dolls belonging to a female Uzbekistan national, the same woman who gave the man the doll.

In an interview with Channel 2, Ben Gurion’s head of security, Zohad Geffen, said that increased security measures were put in place throughout the airport facility upon the discovery of the weapons and narcotics.

“As a result of us locating the weapons, we immediately applied rigorous security procedures as Ben Gurion Airport,” Geffen explained.

Both suspects are being held by police and are expected to be charged with weapons and drug smuggling.
