The IDF shot down a Syrian fighter plane over the Golan Heights with a patriot missile, the army confirmed on Tuesday.

“A jet was successfully intercepted by our aerial defense system along the Syrian border,” the IDF said in a statement.

Tuesday morning, IDF officials were warned of an aircraft that infiltrated Israeli airspace. The aircraft was shot down and did not fall into Israeli territory, the IDF said.

“Moments ago a Syrian aircraft infiltrated Israeli airspace. The IDF intercepted the aircraft mid-flight, using the Patriot air defense system. The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed,” the army said.

Ha’aretz originally reported that the plane was a MiG-21 but the IDF later confirmed it was a Sukhoi-24 “fighter plane.” The Su-24, a Cold War-era Soviet fighter jet, is one of the main jets belonging to the Syrian Air Force. Syrian media and government officials confirmed that the plane was downed near Quneitra, the volatile border region between Israel and Syria.

The Syrian town of Quneitra has been a hotbed of intense fighting between pro-Assad forces and Syrian Islamist rebels over the past month. On August 31, the IDF shot down a Syrian drone as it flew near Quneitra but entered Israeli airspace.

Fighting from Syria has spilled over into Israel, with sporadic mortars and rockets falling on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights. Rebel forces have been slowly gaining control of southern Quneitra, the last southern stronghold of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Tuesday that the Syrian plane approached Israeli airspace in a “threatening manner” and crossed the border.

“We’ve clarified this in the past and we’re emphasizing it again now: We won’t allow anybody, whether it’s a state or a terrorist organization, to threaten our security and violate our sovereignty,” the defense minister and former IDF chief of staff said. “We will respond forcefully to all attempts of this kind, whether it’s an accident or intentional.”

A video posted online by the Syrian rebel-affiliated Syrian Media Organization shows what appears to be the downed fighter plane falling to the ground. The authenticity of the video has yet to be verified.
