US Slams “Offensive” Abbas Speech

The United States slammed Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday, calling it “offensive.”

In his speech, Abbas accused Israel of “genocide” against the Palestinian people and for constantly undermining efforts towards peace.

In a not so subtle snub towards the United States, Abbas made clear that he would no longer abide by Washington’s guidance during future peace negotiations with Israel.

“President Abbas’s speech…included offensive characterizations that were deeply disappointing and which we reject,” said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

“Such provocative statements are counterproductive and undermine efforts to create a positive atmosphere and restore trust between the parties,” she added.

In his speech, Abbas demanded Israel end their occupation of Palestine and sought retribution against what he dubbed “absolute war crimes” against Gaza. The Palestinian leader said that under Israeli “occupation,” the Palestinian people will be forced to live under a “most abhorrent form of apartheid.”

Abbas expressed his previously held hope that 2014 would mark a new stage in Palestinian affairs. Rather, he called 2014 “a year of a new war of genocide perpetrated against the Palestinian people.”

Israeli Knesset members from the right and left had some strong words for Abbas. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Abbas’s remarks “prove for the umpteenth time that Abbas is not a leader who wants peace…but a person who is propagating lies, is engaged in incitement and spreads hate speech against Israel.”

Knesset members Eitan Cabel (Labor) called Abbas’s statements “false and outrageous.”

“They are worthy of condemnation by any true peace supporters. Even if he has internal political needs which force him to ‘wink’ at Hamas, there is no justification for such remarks,” he said.

“This is a disappointing speech that strengthens those who oppose peace, and does not carry with it any hope,” Cabel added.

Likud Deputy Minister Ofir Akunis said that the Palestinian leader’s speech showed “the true face of the PA president.”

“It is obvious that this is not a peace partner but a man who does not miss any opportunity to disseminate Palestinian lies and Israel-hatred,” Akunis stated.

Israeli Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu, who will address the General Assembly on Monday, vowed to “repel the slanders and lies spewed” against the State of Israel by Abbas.
