Fifty members of the Bnei Menashe, one of the 10 Lost Tribes, can now officially call Israel their home when they immigrated from India on Tuesday, making 2014 a record breaking year with the highest number of immigrants from India in recent history.

The wave of immigration was facilitated by Israel Returns, an organization whose goal it is to bring back the “lost Jews” of Israel and work to create a stronger and deeper sense of Jewish identity and connectivity in scattered Jewish communities around the world.

This latest wave of return has brought the total number of Bnei Menashe immigrants so far this year to 500, with another 200 expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

The Bnei Menashe claim descent from the tribe of Menashe (or Manasseh), one of the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel which were exiled by the Assyrian empire after the death of King Solomon more than 2,700 years ago.

Last year, Israel Returns received permission from the Israeli government to bring 900 Bnei Menashe back to Israel by 2015.

Israel Returns Chairman, Michael Freund, thanked the Israeli government for bringing the Bnei Menashe home, referring to the mass immigration as a “modern-day miracle.”

“The return of the Lost Tribe of Bnei Menashe to Zion after 2,700 years of exile is a modern-day miracle,” Freund stated. “It is a testament to the determination and resolve of the people of Israel to come home again.”

“At a time such as this, when the Jewish state finds itself under increasing pressure from the international community, it is comforting to see that God continues to gather His flock, bringing back those who were once deemed to be lost,” he continued.

“We are grateful to Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman and Absorption Minister Sofa Landver for their support of the Bnei Menashe Aliya, and in the coming weeks, Israel Returns will be bringing another 200 Bnei Menashe immigrants to Israel.”

“There are still another 7,000 Bnei Menashe in India waiting to come and I am determined to do everything I can to bring them here as well,” he said.

Israel Returns runs activities in multiple locations all over the world aimed at strengthening the connection between Jews and their heritage and the Land of Israel. This past year, Freund received the 2014 Moskowitz Prize for Zionism for his work in bringing Jews back to their homeland.
