Possible Hack into IDF Computer Systems by Hamas Prompts Investigation

Days after classified Israeli security footage of a thwarted terror attack on Kibbutz Zikim during Operation Protective Edge appeared on Arabic-language websites, Hamas made a claim that it has hacked into the IDF’s computer systems, obtaining additional footage. The new footage, which aired on Arabic TV, shows Hamas operatives infiltrating Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha on July 19.

The first attack, on July 8, resulted in the deaths of all five terrorists who attempted to enter the base from the sea. The sensitive video information may have made its way to the web through a leak, according to Haaretz. A senior officer in cyber defense for the IDF told the paper there were no cyber attacks on the army during Operation Protective Edge, but “an Iranian attack on civilian systems…could have…affected the IDF as well.”

The new video aired Saturday night on al-Aqsa news, reports Israel National News. Under the title “Video Obtained From the Hacking of Military Computers of the Zionist Enemy by the Al-Qassam Brigades,” it portrays the infiltration of Hamas terrorists into Israel through underground tunnels. The attack claimed the lives of two Israeli soldiers,  Amotz Greenberg, 45, a Major (res.) from Hod Hasharon, and Sgt. Adar Barsano, 20, from Nahariya.

Arabic captions accompanying the broadcast proclaim, “On July 19, an operation was performed to penetrate behind enemy lines during Operation Protective Edge. Our fighters were ambushed for six hours in enemy territory, until they reached the set goal: three jeeps. During an attack two jeeps were hit, and we killed several [IDF soldiers].”

The video goes on to say the IDF “had not noticed”, and two operatives are shown returning unharmed to Gaza, carrying the guns of the fallen soldiers.

“Some of the content distributed by Hamas is recognized by the military,” the IDF responded late Saturday night, according to Israel National News. “There is no inquiry [into the issue]. We are investigating whether it was leaked from a classified network.”

In recent months, both the IDF and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) revealed they had established cyber defense initiatives. These revelations led to the establishment of a government authority for cyber defense in September.
