Report: Kerry Threatens Abbas with Sanctions Should UN Bid Continue

US Secretary of State John Kerry is reported to have hinted at Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that should he continue to push his bid for statehood at the UN, Washington would be forced to adopt sanctions against the Palestinians.

In a phone call between Kerry and Abbas Sunday night, Abbas informed the secretary that a draft resolution calling for the “end of the occupation” would be submitted by Jordan to the UN Security Council on Monday.

“We won’t be changing our minds,” Abbas told Kerry.

Among its many demands, the resolution calls for Israeli withdrawal to pre-1967 lines by the end of 2017, the official Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.

An anonymous official told Chinese news agency Xinhua that Kerry objected to the submission of the resolution and asked Abbas to postpone his UN bid until after Israeli elections in March.

Abbas told the secretary of state that he would be pushing the UN Security Council this week to vote on the resolution, which would call for the recognition of a Palestinian state. The Palestinian president is said to have also expressed his opposition against Israeli expansion in East Jerusalem, Jude and Samaria.

In return, Kerry hinted that the US would veto the proposal at the UN Security Council and possibly impose economic sanctions on the Palestinians.

The resolution, which had eight new amendments recently added by Jordan, specifically calls defining East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Al-Arabiya news channel on Friday that the resolution also calls for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

On Saturday, a Hamas official accused the PA and Abbas for not consulting the group and his government’s partner on the draft resolution.

Hamas deputy political chief Moussa Abu Marzouk stated on Facebook, “Our Palestinian people must know what these amended point are…Who submitted the previous resolution, which relinquished the rights and principles of the Palestinian people? Whoever did so should be held into account.”

“Abbas has submitted a shameful document to the Security Council, void of all our rights and with no one knowing its contents, and they want us to stand behind it!” he told labor union leaders in Gaza on Saturday.

Jordan’s ambassador the UN has expressed repeatedly that Jordan wants a full consensus vote on the resolution by all 15 council members.
