Moviegoers in Egypt will not have the chance to watch Hollywood’s latest blockbuster, “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” due to a governmental ban.

The Egyptian government has decided to block the release of the movie claiming the film damages Egypt’s history. The decision was handed down by a special advisory committee that included members of Egypt’s censorship board, historians and cultural representatives.

Egypt’s culture minister, Gaber Asfour, said on Friday that the movie was overtly “Zionist” and “portrays the Zionist view of history.” Based on the narrative telling the story of the Jewish exodus from Egypt, Asfour said the government decided to “boycott” the film.

Among some of the complaints by Egypt about the movie are what it calls historical inaccuracies, such as an earthquake causing the famous parting of the Red Sea and what it says are suggestions that Jews built the Pyramids.

Egypt is not the first country to ban the film. Last week, Morocco announced that it would black the movie as well.

AFP reported that Morocco most likely does not want to screen the move since it is largely a Muslim country. Muslims believe that Moses is a prophet and should therefore not be depicted on film.

With a budget of $140 million, the movie has opened to mixed reviews worldwide. One of the many criticisms of the film overall is the lack of ethnic actors to play some of the more important roles.

Last month, Christian Bale, the actor who plays Moses in the film, came under fire for suggesting that Moses could have been considered a terrorist by Egypt.
