Air raid sirens sounded in the northern Golan Heights on Tuesday afternoon as two rockets fired from southern Syria landed inside Israel.

The IDF confirmed the attack, saying that two rounds struck the Golan Heights. IDF Spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner wrote on Twitter, “following rockets striking the Golan Heights, IDF responded with artillery towards the positions that launched the attack.” Some 20 artillery shells were fired into southern Syria.

Soldiers were ordered to evacuate some 1,000 civilians from the nearby Mount Hermon ski slopes. Yaakov Shochat, an employee at the Mount Hermon site, told NRG that “according to IDF instructions we are evacuating everyone, quietly and peacefully. There is no stress here, and we don’t know anything – we only received instructions from the IDF. There are approximately 1,000 people in the Hermon now.”

Initial reports state that one rocket exploded in an open area near Kibbutz El-Rom, located near the border with Syria. No injuries or damages have been reported on the Israeli side.

Heightened security procedures were immediately activated in Israel’s northern region following the attack. Hezbollah affiliated Al-Manar TV reported Israeli warplanes circling over the Israel-Syria border near the Quneitra region.

The incident took place nine days after a reported Israeli airstrike in the Syrian side of the Golan Heights that an Iranian general, a Hezbollah commander and 10 others.

Hezbollah leaders vowed revenge for the airstrike and threatened retaliation. In wake of the successful strike, which Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement, troops along the border were ordered on high alert.

At least three Iron Dome missile defense batteries were deployed to the north, near the city of Haifa, as an extra precaution for any possible attacks.
