IDF Drilling for Possible Hezbollah Terror Tunnels in North

The Israel Defense Forces began drilling in search of suspected terror tunnels in Northern Israel Wednesday, military sources told The Jerusalem Post. The investigation was initiated at the request of local residents, who reported suspicious noises.

According to a similar report in Haaretz, residents of the Israeli border village of Zarit, near Lebanon, noticed suspicious buildings popping up across the border in the years following the 2006 Lebanon war. A mere 450 meters away, at least ten people on the same street in the village complained of strange sounds over the past few months, prompting the dig.

“We are making checks on the ground following residents’ concerns. We have no intelligence indicating Hezbollah has dug a tunnel, but anything is possible,” a military source told Reuters. “It is the first time we are conducting a search on this scale.”

This is not the first time concerns of northern terror tunnels have been raised. In November, outgoing IDF Northern Commander Maj. Gen. Yair Golan said while no credible evidence has been uncovered to date, Israel must be prepared for the possibility that such tunnels exist.

Tensions in the north have been high since an alleged Israeli airstrike last week in Syria took out 12 Hezbollah and Iranian operatives, including an Iranian general. On Tuesday, two rockets were fired from southern Syria into northern Israel. The rocket fire was met with Israeli artillery shelling.

Then on Wednesday, several IDF positions were attacked from Lebanon, including an anti-tank missile fired on an IDF patrol unit. The army responded with mortar fire directed at Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, who claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Cross-border terror tunnels gained attention during this summer’s Operation Protective Edge, when dozens were uncovered leading from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Their destruction became a major goal of the operation.

Thus far, no tunnels have been located in the north.
