New York City Councilman David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) responded passionately to a Pro-Palestinian protest which broke out during a council meeting last Thursday, calling it an example of “naked, blind anti-Semitism”.
Council members were discussing a resolution to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp in 1945 when the protest broke out in the balcony.Protesters objected to a planned trip by nine council members to Israel in February.
They unfurled a Palestinian flag and began chanting, “Palestinian lives matter,” “Don’t support genocide,” and “Melissa, you’re a hypocrite,” referring to Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who will lead the Israel delegation.
Greenfield, a grandson of Holocaust survivors, claimed he was angry, but “actually somewhat pleased” the outburst took place, because “we can stop pretending this is about Israel” when it is in reality “good, old-fashioned anti-Semitism”.
