Gaza Terror Tunnel Destroyed by IDF

Nearly six-months after the completion of Operation Protective Edge, the IDF demolished what was left of a terror tunnel between the Gaza Strip and Israel late Monday.

The army said in a statement that it found “a cache of weapons and explosives” in the tunnel and that all the demolition was done from the Israeli side of the border.

During the 50-day offensive against Hamas, the army destroyed 31 terror tunnels that were to carry out cross-border attacks against Israelis. In one such incident, Hamas terrorists attacked an IDF outpost near Kibbutz Nahal Oz and killed five soldiers.

Senior officials did admit after the fact that “one or two” tunnels could have gone undetected.

The army confirmed that the recently destroyed tunnel was uncovered during the summer war but failed to explain why it was only demolished now.

The tunnel, the IDF said, was “demolished in order to prevent its rehabilitation in order to safeguard the security of the civilians of southern Israel.”

While the army has worked to uncover and destroy Gaza terror tunnels, Hamas has boasted that it has already begun efforts to rebuild its tunnel infrastructure and attack Israel.

Hamas and other Gaza-based terror groups fired more than 4,500 rockets and other deadly projectiles at Israel during the summer. Majority of those killed during the war were soldiers.
