Evidence Suggesting Terror Tunnel Activity Under Gaza Border Kibbutz Prompts IDF Inquiry

The Israel Defense Force has agreed to follow up on complaints from residents of Kibbutz Nirim on the Gaza border, who claim they have heard tunneling under their homes. The decision comes after one resident turned to a private company to investigate the sounds, Israel’s Channel 10 reported last Wednesday.

The private company is said to have found evidence to substantiate the residents’ fears. This prompted the IDF inquiry.

Terror tunnels in the area are not new; their destruction was one of the primary goals of last summer’s Operation Protective Edge. Hamas has not wasted any time in rebuilding its decimated tunnel system, however, and last month reports came out regarding the use of heavy machinery in the effort.

“A number of side entrances to a tunnel were identified with 70 percent certainty. The tunnel route was mapped out and marked with geo-physical means,” the private report stated. “The findings support the residents’ claims.”

Once the results of the private investigation were made known to the IDF, the army decided to initiate a tunnel-locating operation in the area. In a letter to kibbutz residents, the IDF said the work would begin “in the coming days.”

“Such operations have been taking place in several locations along the Gaza periphery for some time,” the army letter read.

“Any information the army gathers will be brought to the public.”
