Despite objections from Israel and the US, Russia and Iran have completed negotiations over the delivery of Russian-made S-300 missiles.

The delivery is scheduled to take place “within a short period of time,” Iranian Deputy Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian confirmed on Monday during his visit to Moscow.

“The negotiations on this subject have ended in success. I estimate that the delivery of the S-300s will take place in a relatively period of short time,” he was quoted as saying by Russian news outlet RIA Novosti.

Echoing Abdollahian’s comments, his Russian counterpart Mikhail Bogdanov stated the transfer of weapons “will be done at the earliest possible opportunity.”

While the Russian Foreign Ministry has yet to confirm the completion of the weapons deal, the ministry expressed in a statement “the importance of maintaining a regular Russian-Iranian dialogue.”

The sale of the S-300 missiles was originally cancelled in 2010 by former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev under pressure by the US, UN and Israel. With nuclear negotiations underway between Iran and P5+1 world powers, the ban was lifted by President Vladimir Putin in April.

Israel has been a vocal opponent of the deal, arguing the surface-to-air missiles will only embolden Iranian aggression throughout the Middle East.

“It’s an unfortunate decision which encourages aggression and the violent methods of the Iranian government,” said Amos Gilad, director of the Defense Ministry’s political-security division in April.
