Syrian Rebels Boast of Gazan Assistance in Terror Tunnel Building Efforts [VIDEO]

Syrian rebels have been gaining technical expertise in tunnel-building from Hamas and other forces in Gaza. A report by the Syrian-based news site Orient News TV got a look inside a rebel tunnel in the Mount Arbaeen area outside the northern Syrian city of Ariha.

The Syrian report was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). As a guide leads the journalist through the tunnel, he remarks, “We asked for the advice of our brothers in Gaza. They told us that they have been using wooden planks. They even sent me a video and we have been doing it exactly the way they do it.”

The video describes the tunnel as 700 meters (nearly 2,300 feet) long. It appears to be packed with explosives, apparently intended to take out nearby Syrian government positions.

“They have been working on this tunnel for months now. It will be used to target the fortifications of the regime forces on Mount Arbaeen,” the journalist comments.

The rebel group responsible for the tunnel is Ahrar al-Sham, which the Economist reported in 2013 controlled some 10,000 fighters. The group, which may also be receiving funding from Qatar, has been actively involved in heavy fighting in northern Syria, including the areas around the cities of Aleppo and Idlib.

Towards the end of the video, one rebel comments, “God willing, you will witness an earthquake tomorrow.”

Syria has been engaged in civil war for the past four years. Among the forces fighting President Bashar Assad’s government is the Islamic State (ISIS). Although ISIS presents a common enemy, American disapproval of Assad’s actions has complicated US efforts to coordinate a regional response to the threat.
