Stop Pandering to the LGBT

The stabbing attack on participants at last week’s Gay Pride March in Jerusalem should be condemned, and in fact, was condemned by most public officials. Violence against peaceful marchers is criminal and is simply the wrong way to relate to those who disagree with you. Nonetheless, does that make the marchers worthy of financial support?

Most citizens of Israel would agree that the Jihadist approach of attacking those who disagree with you, as practiced in much of the Islamic world, is not the Jewish way to resolve disagreements. The sick individual who carried out the attack in Jerusalem will be incarcerated once again, and the prison system that released him, obviously without proper rehabilitation, should be investigated.BIN-OpEd-Experts-300x250(1)

Even so, the misguided over-reactions by a few usually clear-minded politicians has been disturbing. Education Minister Naftali Bennett (JewishHome) quickly responded to the stabbing attack by ordering a massive enlargement of funds for Israel’s gay youth organization, in a surprising move given his party’s firm stand against gay marriage. Yes, education towards peaceful discourse and against violence is a positive thing. No peaceful individuals should be attacked in the streets of Jerusalem.  If the funds would only go towards preventing future acts of random violence towards “the other”, it would be a good move.

However, most of the worldwide LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) organizations have a much broader, even aggressive political agenda that goes way beyond ensuring individual freedom. In recent years that agenda has intimidated many Americans, restricting freedom of speech and religious ex‎pression by those who oppose same-sex marriage, and ultimately leading to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage.

Israelis should be concerned, as well. In a blatant show of LGBT intolerance, and as evidence of the aggressive focus on that political agenda, Minister Bennett – along with Jewish Home MK Yinon Magal – were reportedly prevented from attending the Tel Aviv rally by the Israeli National LGBT Task Force, while Energy and Water Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud), who did attend in support of the LGBT community was booed offstage by thousands of attendees. Only those public figures on the Left were allowed to participate, because they support “the agenda”, which aims to fundamentally change society by blurring gender identities, eventually leading to public acceptance and legalization of gay marriagein Israel, giving such sexual deviations an equal social status as the traditional family structure, the marriage bond between a man and awoman.

Social laws in a society are based on values, which generally are based on the heritage of the civilization. The traditional family and traditional religious social values are under attack in Western civilization. Theinternational LGBT movement, as an integral part of the Left, is at the forefront of those attacks, which often are quite aggressive, and in some cases, even violent.

Funding the teaching of tolerance can be very positive, but only if it is under the careful auspices of Israel’s Education Ministry and if it has a narrow non-political focus, emphasizing the importance of kindness and of peaceful discourse in a civil society. Funding LGBT organizations that have a long term political agenda is a mistake that Bennett should seriously reconsider.
