An Israeli man was killed in Jerusalem late Sunday night when he lost control of his car after he was attacked by rock throwing by Arabs. The 64 year-old victim, Alexander Leiblovitch, was driving through the in the South Jerusalem Neighborhood of Armon Hanatziv when he was attacked, causing him to lose control of his car and hit an electricity pole. Two other people in the car were injured. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

In an unrelated incident, a man was lightly injured from rocks thrown at him by Arabs in Jerusalem on Monday. No arrests were made. At the same time, a 16 year old Arab was detained for questioning after throwing stones at Border Police officers on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the incidents, saying he would convene an emergency cabinet meeting with Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein and representatives from the security forces directly after the New Year holiday concludes on Tuesday night. There is presently legislation in process that would introduce mandatory sentences for those convicted of throwing stones and firebombs. Netanyahu said he would try to expedite the legislative process.

A government official said, “”The prime minister views with great severity the phenomenon of rock-throwers and throwers of firebombs at Israeli civilians and intends on combating this using all measures, including the stepping up of punishments and enforcement.”

Yair Lapid, opposition member and head of the Yesh Atid party, agreed with the Prime Minister. After expressing condolences to the family of Alexander Leiblovitch, he said, “The rock throwing terror attack that killed Alexander Levlovitz reminds all of us that stones kill. We must act forcefully against these rock throwers and against any terror activity that threatens the citizens of the State of Israel. The government should do everything to fight terrorism and we will give our full support to any action that will restore security for the residents of the State of Israel.”

Tzipi Livni, head of the left-wing Hatnua party and also from the opposition, addressed the rock attacks, saying they “must be stopped. We must act against the stone terror, like against any terror, with a heavy and uncompromising hand.”
