Three rockets fired from Lebanon fell in Israel’s Western Galilee on Sunday evening, causing a red alert siren to sound in the northern city of Nahariya and surrounding towns. There were no reports of injuries or damages.

Several cities opened municipal bomb shelters in response to the sirens, though the mayor of Nahariyah, Jackie Sabag, issued a statement asking residents to carry on with normal activities and saying there was no need to open the shelters as of yet.

According to Lebanese media reports, the rockets were launched from a village near the city of Tyre in Lebanon by the terror group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) as part of a symbolic response to Israel’s killing of Hezbollah official Samir Kuntar earlier on Sunday.

Kuntar, who was responsible for the murders of the Haran family in 1979, was released in 2008 from Israeli prison as part of an exchange with Hezbollah in which the terror group returned the bodies of two IDF soldiers to Israel.

Lebanese media reported increased Israeli air force activity above Lebanon following the rocket strike, including IDF planes flying at low altitudes in the region. In response to the attack, the IDF fired eight mortar shells at the area from which the rockets were launched.

On Sunday, reports emerged of a targeted airstrike on a Damascus suburb which killed Kuntar and other Hezbollah field commanders. Though Israel has not taken direct responsibility for the attack, it is presumed that the strike was Israeli in origin.
