Israel Behind the Lens is a special series highlighting some of Israel’s top photographers. Below, photographer Rebecca Kowalsky shares her most memorable photos captured in Israel in 2015 and the story behind them.
As a photographer in my homeland, almost anything moves me.
The difficult task of choosing from thousands of photographs finally boiled down to a depiction of Israel’s landscape which includes its Human Landscape.
I attempted to cover a little of this and a little of that, where each photograph has a library of many more images telling more of its story.
The first image is from one of my favorite places – the water. This happens to be the Charles Klore Beach in the southern part of Tel Aviv. We see the sails of the boats as they disappear into the evening mist.
The annual Ethiopian ritual celebration of the Sigd is always a fascinating study of a beautiful people. It takes place in Jerusalem overlooking the old city from afar, at the Haas Promenade.
Snow in Israel is not the norm, except maybe on the Hermon mountaintop. Here in Gush Etzion, we see the snowfall in the early morning.
The Dead Sea in its pristine beauty and quiet exudes a peace that we could all use.
Jerusalem is our heart, our pulse, our center…in every way. Day and Night. All the time.
Through its gates we see and feel so many sites. All paths seem to lead to the Kotel (the Western wall – the Wailing Wall).
Far in the north are the beautiful Grottos of Rosh Hanikra. The water is so powerful and loud.
The “other capital” of Israel – the beautiful and cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv has the water as one of its main attractions.
The Besor rope bridge in the southern region is one of a kind in Israel.
We always return to our soul – it centers us and leads us forward as a nation. Jerusalem.

Rebecca (Nathan) Kowalsky made Aliyah to Israel from Chicago, in 1985, with her husband Yossi. A mother of six and a grandmother of 2, she lives in Efrat, in the Gush Etzion region. Rebecca has loved photography ever since taking her first course in high school. She is drawn to artistic landscape photography of scenes from all over the Land of Israel, as well as around the world.
