An unnamed European Union representative travelling from Jordan into Israel via the Allenby crossing on Thursday was caught at the border with a huge quantity of gold, steroids, and smart phones. When officials searched the vehicle they were shocked to find over 700 smart phones, dozens of kilograms of gold bullion and solid gold jewelry, and illegal steroids. Altogether, the contraband was estimated to be worth over $2.5 million.
The EU diplomat, a consultant to EU’s mission to the Middle East, was detained and later released, and his driver – an Arab resident of the Atarot neighborhood of Jerusalem – was detained for investigation. The driver had his arrest extended to next Sunday by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court.
