When Anti-Semitism Comes to College

As anti-Israel movements increase in size worldwide, one organization is doing everything it can to give the next generation the tools they need to combat the spread of hate.

Movements calling for the labeling and boycott of Israeli-made products, especially those manufactured in Judea and Samaria, have reached international scales. Through the likes of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, people everywhere are being taught the deceitful rhetoric that Israel is “one of the worst offenders worldwide” and  “probably today one of the only racist countries by law”, in the words of Professor Joseph Massad of Columbia University.

Furthermore, the leaders of countless countries are revealing their true colors as Palestinian sympathizers, advocating for an end to the “occupation” and for all Jews to relieve the Palestinians from the so-called oppressive Israeli regime.

Not only does BDS show little sign of dying out, but the next generation is being quickly indoctrinated into the anti-Israel ideology. The lies posed by the movement are becoming increasingly appealing to those most vulnerable to their hateful message: college students.

Established in 2001, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a student-run organization, today boasts more than 126 chapters throughout American college campuses. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), SJP is “the primary organizer of anti-Israel events on US college campuses and the group most responsible for bringing divestment resolutions to votes  in front of student governments.”

Israel Apartheid Week is one such anti-Israel event. Hosted by SJP in America as well as universities across Europe, North and South America, South Africa and even within Israel itself, Apartheid Week aims to build support for the BDS movement with panels, film screenings, speakers, demonstrations, rallies, flyers, and more. Chants such as “Long live the intifada” and “Israel is a terrorist state” become commonplace on college campuses during this time each year as otherwise uneducated students are brainwashed into believing Israel truly is the cause of Palestinian suffering.

Step Up on Campus aims to change all that with their newest project, aptly titled “How to Stand Up to Anti-Israel Activity”. By providing students with the “tools to overcome the hate that pervades our colleges and universities”, Step Up on Campus empowers pro-Israel students and faculty by increasing confidence in their ability to defend Israel with the truth.

Such tools include films and resource kits which will help prepare students for potential campus scenarios involving anti-Israel extremists. Fighting the spread of anti-Israel activists who create discord with their lies, Step Up on Campus’s kits will bring unity and pride for the Jewish state, establishing a firm pro-Israel stance where there once was none.

The real danger lies in the fact that SJP and BDS are targeting the population that is most easily influenced and therefore most susceptible to believing the slander they spread. With their crowdfunding campaign, Step Up on Campus is asking the public to to equip countless students with the knowledge and skillset to confront and combat anti-Israel prejudice on campus.

As the country currently faces defamation worldwide, every word defending Israel is absolutely crucial.
