An IDF unit serving in the Judean village of Ni’lin was shot at and attacked late Wednesday night, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The soldiers had attempted to stop a suspicious car that was leaving the area when they were shot at from the vehicle. After halting the vehicle, while searching it, a second car attempted to run over the company commander. The commander opened fire, scaring off the driver, who drove away in a panic.

The IDF said investigations were continuing in the area.

The has been a significant uptick in attempted acts of violence on Israeli soldiers by Palestinians recently. In September, Palestinian perpetrators killed two IDF soldiers in separate incidents in the West Bank. A Palestinian sniper on September 22 shot dead St.-Sgt. Maj. Gavriel Kobi, who was stationed at the Tut Atarek Junction, across from the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Earlier that weekend, a Palestinian man lured 20-year-old Sgt. Tomer Hazan to an Arab village and murdered him.

In light of the incidents, former IDF Central Command chief Gadi Shamni expressed his fears a new intifada could be in the works.
