TV and radio personality Glenn Beck has called for a day of fasting and prayer on Tuesday, the day of Indiana’s primary election, in order to help guide the nation spiritually towards his chosen candidate, Senator Ted Cruz.

Beck, a Christian conservative whose political views are inspired by his religious beliefs, has been a staunch Cruz supporter throughout the long campaign, proclaiming the Texas senator “anointed for this time” and encouraging his Christian followers to vote for him.

However, the GOP presidential nomination seems more and more likely to go to current front-runner Donald Trump. On the eve of a what is expected to be a decisive primary in the state of Indiana, Beck used social media to announce the #Tuesdayfast, a day of “prayers, fasting and humility”, he wrote on his Facebook page.

The purpose of the 24-hour fast, lasting from sundown on Monday to Tuesday night, is “to beg the Lord to not remove His hand from us. To turn to Him and ask that He will heal our land,” said Beck.

The announcement, posted on Monday morning from Indiana after Beck spoke to several thousand people at a Cruz rally, began with an anecdote about George Washington intended to emphasize the role of God in the establishment and character of America.

After being sworn in as president in 1789, Washington proceeded to St. Paul’s Chapel in Manhattan and “spent four hours in prayer and made a covenant with God”, the popular media figure said. That covenant: “He will be our God and we shall be His people.”

He added that that America was “the only nation since ancient Israel to have actually made a covenant” with God.

“I believe this covenant is still in effect. It has protected us and this land for a great while,” Beck continued, before going on to admonish the US for “shunning God, and now openly mocking him” by separating church and state.

“We have chased Him from our public spaces and conversations, His laws are not recognized anymore in most of our courtrooms, schools, business’ nor our homes and not only can we as a people not name the basic ten laws of God, we break them as individuals and as a nation on a regular basis,” he remonstrated.

He then turned to the current election, which Beck urged “may be our last chance”, pointing as an example to the Supreme Court judges which will be appointed by the next president.

“He is asking each of us to choose,” wrote Beck. “America is at a cross roads. If we choose a King, he will give us one. He always does. …Who will you serve? Principles, truth, kindness, and decency or those who deal in greed, hate, anger and fear.”

“Cry out to Him,” Beck urged. “Let us renew our covenant with Him and as George Washington did and humbly seek his face, guidance and protection.”

In a separate campaign, which Beck praised on Facebook, a group of Australian Christians are calling on co-religionists throughout the world to “pray and fast for the United States.”

“Right now, the USA is in a spiritual battle for its very survival as a nation under God,” said Warwick Marsh of Australian Heart Ministries, Charisma reported. “We are praying for revival and transformation for America according to 2 Chronicles 7:14.”

“It is time for us to call the nations of the world to stand in the gap in prayer for America,” Marsh declared.

While Glenn Beck’s call for a fast day made its rounds on social media, the tone of those sharing his hashtag may not have been what he was hoping for.
