Two Russian pilots were killed during a battle against ISIS near Palmyra, Syria over the weekend, Israel National News reported.

The pilots were in the midst of carrying out an attack against a troop of Islamic State fighters in the Homs region on Friday, when their Syrian Mi-25 chopper ran out of ammunition, the Russian Defense Ministry said, according to Interfax.

As the helicopter was attempting to turn, it “was hit by militants’ gunfire from the ground and crashed in the area controlled by the Syian government army,” it said, adding that the crew had died on impact.

ISIS’s news agency Amaq published video footage of the helicopter being shot and crashing to the ground against cries of, “It’s fallen, God is great.”

Since the civil war in Syrian borders broke out in September, Russia has continually provided support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, backing their forces on the ground and by air.

Though Russia’s assistance for the war-torn country initially raised eyebrows at Moscow’s true intentions, President Vladimir Putin made his objectives very clear, emphasizing his goals were to defeat radical Islamic terror in the region and restore power to Assad’s crippled regime.
