Ali Sonboly, an 18-year-old native German with Iranian citizenship, opened fire Friday evening in a mall in Munich, killing nine and wounding 16, three in critical condition.

Sonboly used a Glock 9mm pistol and had over 300 rounds of ammunition. The serial numbers on the gun had been removed and police are still trying to track down where the killer acquired his weapon.

Police stated there were no links between the attack and any terror group, though security cameras show Sonboly bursting from the bathroom, shooting while yelling “Allahu Akhbar“. Police claim the killer had an “obvious link” to extreme right-wing Norwegian mass murderer, Anders Behring Breivik who detonated a bomb in a van in Oslo in 2011, killing eight people. Breivik was motivated by anger at Muslim immigration into Norway, and police are claiming that Sonboly had a similar motive. The shooting in Munich happened on the fifth anniversary of Anders Breivik’s massacre in Norway. The Daily Mirror reported that the teen had a picture of Breivik as his Whatsapp social media profile and a friend told German media he was a “fan of mass murders.”

UK Telegraph reported that Sonboly may have tried to lure more people to McDonald’s by posing on Facebook as a teenage girl called ‘Selina Akim’ and claiming the restaurant was going to offer free food and gifts.

Ali David Sonboly was born and raised in Germany. His father, a taxi driver, emigrated from Iran.

His body was found a kilometer from the scene with what appears to be a self-inflicted wound. Police used a robot to check the body for explosives. It is not known how he managed to elude 100 policemen who were called to the scene.

Germany is in shock from the second attack in one week. Last Monday night, a 17-year-old Afghan refugee attacked passengers on a train in Bavaria, injuring four. Police are still seeking a motive in that attack.
