‘Allahu Akhbar’ Machete Attack Injures 2 Belgian Policewomen

A machete wielding man yelling ‘Allahu Akhbar‘ (God is great in Arabic) attacked two policewomen in the Belgian city of Charleroi just before 4 PM on Saturday afternoon. A third policewoman shot and killed the attacker, whose identity is still unknown. One policewoman sustained deep cuts to the face and was rushed to hospital. The other victim was only slightly injured.

The attacker was in the process of passing through an external checkpoint outside the police station when he pulled the machete from a sports bag and attacked the policewomen.  The checkpoint is a security measure put in place after the nation’s threat level was raised in the wake of the wave of bomb attacks that hit Belgium.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel told broadcaster RTL by phone: “Initial indications very clearly point towards terrorism.”

Charleroi is considered particularly at risk since it was used as a base by some of the jihadists involved in the attacks on Paris in November 2015 that killed 130 and an attack on the Brussels airport and Metro in March that killed 32. Belgium has kept its terror alert at the third of four levels, meaning an attack is “possible and likely.”
