The National Transportation Safety Board announced that a small plane was intentionally crashed in Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon by Jordanian student pilot, 28 year old  Feras M. Freitekh. The investigation was turned over to the FBI, who are exploring the possibility of a connection to terror.

The Hartford Courant reported that  Freitekh began flying erratically and the instructor, identified as Arian Prevalla, fought to gain control of the Piper PA 34 twin-engine plane before it crashed into a utility pole on Main Street in Est Hartford. It was reported that Freitekh was distraught over his poor performance at the flight academy. The plane took off from Hartford-Brainard Airport and crashed near the complex of defense contractor, Pratt Whitney complex in East Hartford at 3:40 pm.

Prevalla is in serious condition but expected to recover. He is speaking with authorities despite his injuries.

Freitekh’s Facebook page features several photos displaying his enthusiasm for flying, including a picture of him kissing the propeller of his plane.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said to the press on Wednesday that the situation concerned him.

“As a nation, we have had to adjust to this new reality, we recognize that people almost always wonder if someone meant to do us harm, but we must exercise caution without jumping to conclusions before discovering all the facts,” Malloy said.

Freitekh was a Jordanian national who first entered the U.S. in 2012 on a temporary student M1 visa to complete a course in flight school. His visa changed to an F1 when he went to a language school in Toledo, Ohio. His staus the reverted back to an M1 visa.
