US Actively Spied on Israel

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help (Psalms 146:3)

It was discovered over the weekend that the US actively spied on Israel from 2007-2011 in a variety of ways. In addition to phone tapping and email monitoring, Yedioth Ahronot reported that the US rented an apartment across from then Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s home with a supposed “sizable amount of electronic equipment.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu has long taken measures to avoid US surveillance. He has no office computer, does not use email or maintain a private phone. He even holds his most confidential meetings in secure Mossad offices and resorts to hand gestures as opposed to verbal speech to keep confidential matters secret.

Take this poll and let us know if you think that the US spying on Israel is a major scandal or standard procedure.

Here are 7 responses from leading politicians on America’s spying on Israel:

1) Yuval Steinitz, Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs and Intelligence

“Israel has unique intelligence relationships with the US and Britain — it [operates] like one intelligence community that shares information. Under these conditions, I think it’s unacceptable. We don’t spy on the US President and the White House… [Israel’s] working assumption is that even friendly countries try to listen in, and [Israel] takes the necessary security measures.”

2) Nachman Shai, Member of Knesset (Labor Party)

“Israel’s silence is embarrassing and disappointing. How can we just move on after such revelation? Just like other countries such as Brazil and Germany, it’s appropriate that Israel get from the US explanations, clarifications, and, most importantly, a formal statement that these activities have ended.”

3) Dr. Lawrence Korb, Former US Assistant Secretary of Defense

"The lack of proportion of Pollard's sentence and his weakening medical condition in any case demands his release by any measure of justice...during the time that (the US is) so stubborn about (Pollard's) continued sentence after 29 years, we ourselves are spying on Israeli leaders...Pollard's release now isn't just demanded by justice, but will also remove from (the US) moral embarrassment."

4) Isaac Herzog, Head of the left-wing Labor Party and Opposition in the Knesset

“...the years-long active surveillance the US committed against Israel’s leadership clarify at long last one painful point – that the punishment given to Jonathan Pollard crossed the line of reasonability long ago. These reports strengthen the argument that it’s simply unjust to continue to punish him, since we now know that the United States worked in a variety of ways to surveil and collect intelligence on an ally as close as Israel.”

5) Yisrael Katz, Israel Minister of Transportation

“This is how friends behave? Pollard was arrested for far less than the alleged espionage acts revealed in recent days. I intend to recommend that the government demand an American commitment to end the surveillance and immediately release Pollard.”

6) Tzachi Hanegbi, Member of Knesset and former Chair of Israel’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee

“...classic act of espionage...very grave if true...the kind of behavior that Israel obligated itself not to carry out against the US (after Pollard)...”

7) Ayelet Shaked, Member of Knesset (Jewish Home party)

“The continued incarceration of Pollard at this point is absurd and morally embarrassing.”
