“If there be among you a needy man, one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates, in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thy heart, nor shut thy hand from thy needy brother; but thou shalt surely open thy hand unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need in that which he wanteth.”  (Deuteronomy 15:7-8)

With summer approaching rapidly, many working parents struggle to find safe alternative frameworks for their children while they are at work.  For some, the high cost of summer camp puts it out of reach.  The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews believes that “every child has the right and ability to realize their potential, regardless of their family’s economic situation or living conditions, if given the opportunity, support and resources,” according to Fellowship president Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, and as such has partnered with Mifalot Education and Society Enterprises to offer summer programming to underprivileged children in 50 communities across Israel.  Some 13,000 children are expected to participate in the programs; about 10,000 kids from Jewish communities and another 3,000 from Arab communities.

Like any summer camp, programming will include sports, computers, field trips and Israel education, as well as other activities.  Campers will be provided with everything they need to enjoy summer camp in a kit which includes a Tshirt, sunscreen, a hat, a bag and a water bottle.  The Fellowship intends to spend NIS 16 million on the summer program.

This program is just one of many ways in which the Fellowship works to assist “hundreds of thousands of Jews escape poverty and anti-Semitism and return to their biblical homeland,” according to its website.  Among its charitable programs, IFCJ supports poor Jews living in Israel and abroad, provides assistance to those wishing to move to Israel and runs Israel advocacy training and education programs.
