In a recently televised address, a Hamas lawmaker called for the “massacre” of Jews, justifying his views by explaining that the Koran proclaims that killing Jews is a religious obligation.

Yunis Al-Astal’s address was televised on Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV on March 6th and was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

“I would like to begin by quoting what Allah said about them [Jews]: ‘The worst beasts in the sight of Allah are those who disbelieve. They are the ones with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time,’” Al-Astal said.

“The obvious question is: What is the solution to his gang of people? The Al-Anfal chapter of the Koran provides us with the answer,” he explained.

“After He said: ‘They are the ones with whom you made a covenant, but they break their covenant every time,’ Allah added: ‘If you gain mastery over them in a war, use them to disperse those who follow them that they may remember.’ This indicated that we must massacre them, in order to break them down and prevent them from sowing corruption in the world. They are the ones who still spark the flame of war, but Allah has taken it upon Himself to extinguish it.”

Yunis Al-Astal also said that the Jewish people must pay the “jizya” tax. Under Sharia law, non-Muslims living under Muslim sovereignty must pay this tax in return for protection. Recently, Jihadist rebels in Syria have imposed the jizya tax on Christians living in areas they control.

The release of the translated video came on the same day that Hamas’s Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh threatened Israel that it would pay a big price should Israel try to reoccupy Gaza. Haniyeh’s threats came less than 24 hours after an IDF raid in Jenin which killed three terrorists, among them a senior Hamas operative.

“We tell the enemy and Liberman who is threatening to reoccupy Gaza that the time for your threats is over,” Haniyeh said at a rally in Gaza City. “Any aggression or crime or stupidity you commit will cost you a very high price.”

Haniyeh’s comments were in response to Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, who is becoming more vocal in his support to retake the Gaza Strip and put an end to rocket attacks.

On March 12, speaking on the barrage of rockets fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip by Islamic Jihad, Liberman said, “There is no way to avert a full occupation of the Gaza Strip; only then can we ensure that these images do not recur. We cannot ignore such an attack…”

Thousands of Hamas supporters flooded Gaza City as a sign of unity and strength. The rally took place on Sunday to commemorate the death of Sheik Ahmed Yassin, Hamas’s spiritual leader, who was killed by Israel in a targeted airstrike 10 years ago.

Hamas has been fighting a leadership battle with Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip as well as financial problems.

“The resistance is stronger than you think, and our force has doubled and our arsenal has doubled,” Haniyeh assured the crowd. “What is hidden from you is bigger than you think.”
