Happy 71st Birthday Israel…Since 1948

Of course, this is really only since 1948, after nearly 2,000 years of exile.

In reality and it should never be forgotten, we are not a new State, but our connection to Jerusalem and the Jewish Homeland dates back to the covenant between Hashem and Avraham Avinu (3,800 years ago).

And we should also remember that we have been a sovereign Jewish State and commonwealth for 810 years if one includes the First and Second Temple Periods.

We are indeed living in miraculous times and as such, the Chief Rabbinate instituted Psalms, Hallel and a festive meal (Seudat Hodaya) on Independence Day.

On a day when miracles were abound and open for all to see……on a day when after 2,000 years, we had the courage against the odds to declare a State….on a day when, with Hashem’s help we were victorious in the Independence Day war against the Arab nations who amassed on our borders – we should be praising Hashem and being ever so grateful for the miracle of the State of Israel.

19 years after the War of Independence, the Arab enemy once again tried to wipe out the Jewish State – and “drive us into the sea.”  However, these enemies like the Egyptian army in the times of Moses were “washed and squatted away” in a mere 6 days in 1967.

The Six Day War saw a return the ancient Homeland of Am Yisrael (Judea and Samaria) and the Jewel of Jerusalem (Old City and its environs) was returned to her rightful heirs.

Since 1967 – Ateret Cohanim has been fighting the “7th Day War”, strengthening Jewish roots in the heart of Jerusalem and making sure Jerusalem stays firmly in Jewish hands. The redeeming of land in and around the Old City (Ateret Cohanim Israel only) has brought back Jewish life and Torah learning to the old Jewish Quarter (85 families), to the Mount of Olives (110 families), to the old Yemenite Village of Shiloach (21 families) and to Kidmat Zion (10 families).

Ateret Cohanim acting like the “JNF of old” has indeed pushed that “Messianic donkey” forward and has walked thru the door of redemption that G-d has opened.

The Rambam (Maimonides) speaks of Jewish sovereignty as a true sign of the Redemption.

Well, even if we aren’t a true Torah State – who can deny that our Jewish State is far better than the Babylonian, Persian, Roman, Crusader, Ottoman and British rulers (all bylines in history books today).

We came back home, we won wars, the deserts have bloomed, we are a light to the nations, we have world wide recognition, we have come on “wings of eagles” to our Land…….Torah is felt and learnt in every corner of the country…..and the words of the prophets have been realized.

And so we sing G-d’s praises in the Psalms, we say Hallel on Yom Haatzmaut – Independence Day and on Yom Yerushalayim – Jerusalem Day!!

From the furnaces of the concentration camps…from the stuffy destroyed ghettos…banished from Europe and Arab countries…..the meek, weak and crushed “Jewish skeleton” with spirit, hope and passion, has managed to push the Redemption process forward.

Hashem has attached muscles, sinews on these skeletons and has blessed His People.

Hashem has opened up the floodgates to Redemption- Geula and it is indeed clear for all to see.

Some great Rabbinical figures have called it the Messianic period, others use the terminology of the footsteps of the Messiah or the physical Redemption process.

It’s all true.

We have returned home, and today we have our own beautiful and thriving State and in control of our own destiny on Hashem’s Road Map.

Something to smile about.

Something to pray about.

Something to thank and praise Hashem about!!!!
