Jerusalem City Hall inspectors ordered the US Embassy to remove a gay pride banner commemorating ‘Pride month’ at a building that belongs to the US embassy adjacent the downtown area of Jerusalem on Tuesday. The removal came after Deputy Mayor Arieh King complained that the banner was hoisted illegally calling it “impure” reports Jpost.

The banner was taken down as the American embassy never received official authorization to display it in the first place according to a statement from the Jerusalem Municipality. By law, the embassy must request permission from Jerusalem City Hall to display the banner and can erect a new one ass soon as a permit is received.
The banner was displayed on a wall of the US Embassy’s Palestinian Affairs Unit on Agron Street, near the Old City.
Seen as an affront to the Jewish values of Jerusalem King said that “anyone who tries to defile the holiness of Jerusalem needs to be opposed. Whether it is an Israeli organization but all the more so when talking about a guest who came to the city,” according to Arutz Sheva.
“I expect the municipality to handle it quickly and efficiently and to remove the impurity from the public area of Jerusalem,” said King.
In response, Jerusalem’s ‘Open House’, an organization that serves as a community for LGBT members said in a statement: “We are disturbed that Deputy Mayor Aryeh King ordered city inspectors to take down our sign that we erect on a US embassy building every year.”
“It’s a shame that instead of helping all Jerusalemites, Deputy Mayor King is again trying to erase the LGBT community and to erase their enlightenment. This attempt will be met with failure” the statement read.
