Syrian television and Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV claimed Sunday that Israeli Air Force planes had struck targets in and around Damascus.

“The Israeli enemy committed aggression against Syria by targeting two safe areas in Damascus province, in all of Dimas and near the Damascus International Airport,” Ynetnews reported Syrian state television channel SANA as saying.

As is its policy, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) refused to comment on “foreign reports”.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is monitoring the conflict in Syria, said in total, ten explosions were heard near Dimas. All sources report no casualties.

The Syrian army later confirmed damage to its facilities, accusing Israel of supporting regional terror.  “In a flagrant attack the Israeli enemy executed strikes on two security installations this afternoon on the outskirts of Damascus, near the international airport.

“This direct aggression was undertaken to aid the terrorists in Syria after our forces claimed major victories in a-Zur and Aleppo.

“This aggression demonstrates Israel’s direct involvement in supporting terrorism in Syria along with well-known regional and Western countries to raise the morale of terrorist groups, mainly the Nusra Front,” the military said in a statement carried by SANA.

The air strikes were centered in an area not far from the Lebanese border, and Western sources claim the target was a warehouse of advanced S-300 missiles, en route from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon, a claim supported by Salim Idris, former head of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army, in a statement to an al-Arabiya new channel subsidiary. Israel has said in the past it would do whatever it takes to keep advanced weapons from reaching the Lebanese terror organization.

On several occasions since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, Israel has been accused of attacking Syrian weapons targets, most recently in January. Each time, Israel has refused to confirm or deny the allegations.
