Deputy Environmental Protection Minister Ofir Akunis (Likud) has a lot to say about what Israel’s response should be to the Palestinian Authority’s hostile diplomatic moves at the United Nations (UN) and at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Akunis, a close ally of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the Likud, recently remarked that “we have to take off the kid gloves.” The response to the moves, according to Akunis, is that “we need to apply sovereignty on Judea and Samaria. Their unilateral move needs to be hit by a clear response – applying sovereignty and pushing settlement.”

Furthermore, Akunis sharply criticized Tzipi Livni, co-leader of the leftist Labor-Hatnua party, claiming that she is still obsessed by the illusion of a peace partner on the so-called Palestinian side:

“I don’t trust her”, he said. “She will never admit to her failure (as peace negotiator). She said that we need to sit in a room and talk even when she knew that it was impossible. There’s no peace partner on the other side,” said the deputy minister.

While it’s hard to disagree with his criticism of Livni and while his proposed response to the PA’s moves at the UN and the ICC is certainly reasonable, one has to wonder if he has consulted his boss in the Likud, who is disturbingly silent about his own lack of a response to the PA’s diplomatic aggression. Especially now, during an election campaign, the public deserves to know which Bibi Netanyahu it will be getting – the one who has warned many times that PA diplomatic aggression towards Israel in international bodies will be met with a strong Israeli response – or the one that has called for the two-state solution, otherwise known as “land for peace”.

The sad fact is that since his first term as PM, Netanyahu’s Zionist actions have never lived up to his Zionist words, not in the realm of settlement, not in his indecisive role as commander-in-chief of the military, nor in his lack of resolve in rejecting diplomatic hostility with more than words.

Obviously, the Tzippi Livni-Yitzhak Herzog team on the Left is far worse, as is Yair Lapid, but if Likud wins and Netanyahu succeeds in forming the next coalition, we the voters need to know the answers to the following three questions:

1. Would the next Netanyahu-led coalition be urged by its leader to adopt the Levy Report, which affirmed the historic legality of Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria?

2.Would the next Netanyahu-led coalition consider dissolving the PA as a sensible response to PA sponsored terrorism and diplomatic aggression against Israel?

3. Would the next Netanyahu-led coalition end the unannounced freeze on the granting of housing permits for Jews in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria?

The election is on March 17. Waiting for answers…
