Foreign media reported overnight Wednesday that “foreign planes” struck targets in Omdurman, the capital of the state of Khartoum in Sudan. The strikes are said to have occurred late Tuesday night.

The Al-Araby al-Jadeed newspaper cited “credible” Sudanese military officials, although the strike has yet to be officially confirmed.

A military source told the media outlet that “members of the Air Defense Command in Sudan hit targets, with the assumption being the strike was carried out by a warplane in the area of Wadi Seidna in the city of Omdurman.”

Witnesses near the military site said they saw and hear large explosions, which is located near the Nile River. The paper quoted witnesses of the strike as saying they believe the planes were Israeli.

Sudanese forces fired anti-aircraft weapons at the warplanes, with a Sudanese official telling the paper that the explosions were caused by airstrikes from a “foreign entity.”

A Sudanese army spokesman denied any attack occurred but did confirm that anti-aircraft fire had been directed at an object in the sky.

Israeli is believed to have carried out airstrikes in Sudan in the past, although they have never been officially confirmed. The IDF refused to comment on the report, Army Radio reported.

Israel has accused the Sudanese government in the past of aiding Hamas and transferring weapons to the Gaza Strip to be used against Israel.

In July 2014, foreign media reported an Israeli strike on an ammunition warehouse in the same area, storing weapons that were intended for Hamas.

In October 2012, four people were killed in an explosion at a Yarmouk weapons plant in Khartoum. It is believed that an Israeli airstrike caused the explosion.

In March 2009, three airstrikes destroyed a weapons convoy in western Sunday carrying Iranian made long-range missile destined for Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Foreign media reports attributed the strikes to Israel.
