The IDF declassified footage of Israeli soldiers saving the life of a Syrian rebel who made it across the border to Israel alive to receive medical treatment.

In what is becoming somewhat of a trend, Israeli doctors and medics stationed in the Golan Heights are seen treating what the IDF says is the most severely wounded Syrian rebel who has thus far made it to Israeli territory.

According to an assessment made by the acting IDF Chief Medical officer in the area, the injured rebel was treated at the border, then inside Israeli territory and was eventually able to return to Syria, where it is assumed he will once again take up the fight against the Assad Regime.

Fellow rebels transported the injured man to the Israeli border in conjunction with the IDF where he was treated by medics of the Givati brigade. He suffered a gunshot wound  to the stomach and shrapnel wounds across much of his body.

“I have seen a lot of serious injuries in the past, but I have to note that this was one of the most severe injuries I have ever seen,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Itzik Malka, the area’s chief medical officer, according to a report on Ynet.

“I am not sure that I would have believed that someone in his condition could have gotten here alive,” the lieutenant colonel said.

Syrian President Bashar Assad, alongside his Iranian and Hezbollah partners, has been engaged in a bloody civil war against Islamist rebels that has ravaged the country for several years.

With the advance of ISIS troops in northern Syria, a second front has enmeshed the Assad regime in an even greater vicious civil war that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrians, both militants and bystanders. The Christian community throughout the country as been greatly devastated as well.

Israel maintains a permanent IDF field hospital long the Syrian border. IDF medical teams are on call 24/7 to help the injured who make it to Israeli territory. It is estimated that over 1,600 injured Syrians have been treated by Israeli medical teams by the IDF as well as across hospitals in the northern part of the country.

Treating the wounded of the civil war who trickle across Israel’s border has had its impact on the Israeli medical teams who work at the field hospital. “[Treating the wounded here] has personally affected me deeply,” said Malka. “It is very difficult to deal with as a father of two children. Especially when we treat a severely injured child…we always hope that children can successfully recover from their injuries.”

Israel is maintaining a strictly humanitarian interest in treating the wounded. According to Malka, most of the wounded have been women, children and elderly non-combatants. However when injured combatants do arrive, many of whom come from Islamic terror organizations such as Al Qaeda, Israel maintains the humanitarian posture that it has built up and treats them as well.
