IDF artillery struck two military targets in Syria on Sunday in response to stray fire landing in the Golan Heights. For two days in a row, projectiles from conflicts in Syria landed in open areas in Israel. No damage was reported however Israel holds the Syrian military responsible. In neither case did warning sirens sound an alert.

“The IDF holds the Syrian military responsible for all events stemming from its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel’s sovereignty and the safety of its residents,” the IDF said in a statement.

Defense Minister Moshe Ayalon stated, “From our perspective this is a violation of sovereignty and a crossing of a red line The State of Israel has no intention of ignoring such incidents, and the IDF therefore attacked two Syrian army artillery positions this evening. We view the Syrian regime and its army as being responsible for what happens in their territory and we will not be tolerant in cases such as these.”

The IDF targeted two army positions in a town in the southwest Quneitra province and a deputy brigade commander of the Syrian army’s 90th battalion was said to have been moderately injured in the IDF strikes. According to an unconfirmed report by Israel Hayom, at least two Syrian soldiers were killed in the IDF shelling.

Spillover fire has been a growing probably on Israel’s border with Syria, however any response is problematic as foreign involvement in the Syrian civil war is increasing. Russia has established an airbase in Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad and France has recently begun airstrikes against the Islamic State (ISIS).
