Netanyahu: Israelis “Have Known Worse…Will Also Overcome This Wave of Terrorism”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Israeli resilience in the face of terrorism on Wednesday, saying the country has suffered through worse.

“We are still in the midst of a wave of terror,” the prime minister told Jerusalem police officers. “We have known worse times than this and we will also overcome this wave of terrorism with determination, responsibility and unity.”

The prime minister addressed security forces hours after a Palestinian terrorist stabbed a soldier and stole his gun in Kiryat Gat. The terrorist fled the scene into a nearby residential building, where he was shortly tracked down and killed by police.

“I want to commend the courage and composure displayed by Israel’s citizens in recent days, as well as today in Jerusalem and Kiryat Gat,” Netanyahu stated.

On Wednesday, Palestinian terrorists unleashed a wave of attacks across Israel. A Palestinian woman stabbed an Israeli man in the Old City of Jerusalem before being shot by her victim. On a road in Judea, a woman survived a near lynching by a Palestinian mob. In the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Aby Tor, a 15-year-old Palestinian male was arrested after attempting to stab police officers.

Later in the evening, a Palestinian driver attempted to run over security forces stationed at a checkpoint east of Jerusalem. Two people were injured in the attack. In Petah Tikvah, a city outside Tel Aviv, one person was moderately injured in a knife attack outside a busy shopping center located across the street from Beilinson Hospital.

The stabber was identified by the Shin Bet as Tamer Younis Ahmed Vereidat, 25, from the Palestinian town of Daheira, located near Hebron.

“Immediately upon getting off the bus, he began to stab a citizen, who had been on the sidewalk, in the upper body,” the police confirmed in a statement. “The citizen was moderately injured. Civilians on the scene apprehended the attacker.”

In a video from the scene of the attack, Israelis are seen tending to the stabbing victim on the side of the road. The terrorist is also seen apprehended by bystanders, who police had to fend off after the crowd is seen attempting to beat up and cursing.

While Netanyahu is urging calm among the citizens of Israel, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has issued a call on residents to begin carrying their licensed personal firearms.

“The mayor encouraged licensed gun owners to carry their weapons to increase security. He himself serves as a personal example of this,” the Jerusalem municipality was quoted as saying by Walla! News.

The municipality confirmed that Barkat has begun to carry his own weapon. “Given the current escalation in the security situation, those with a licensed firearm who know what to do must go out with [their weapon] – it’s an imperative,” Barkat told Army Radio on Thursday. “In a way, it’s like military reserve duty.”
