The Israel Police apprehended two Palestinians from eastern Jerusalem overnight, one of them 16 years old and the second one under the age of 12, on suspicion of committing a stabbing attack on a 17-year-old Israeli on January 30 at the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City.

The 16-year-old suspect turned himself in when he realized that the police were closing in on him. He was remanded at the Jerusalem Magistrates Court at 11:00 on Sunday, January.

The younger suspect linked himself to the attack during his interrogation at a special police unit, and will be handed over to welfare officials.

According to the police, two young Jews were returning from the Western Wall when they were attacked from behind by two Palestinian terrorists. While one of them was hurt in the attack, his friend escaped and called for help.

The victim sustained light back injuries and is currently in stable condition at Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus.

“When we arrived at the scene, we saw a fully conscious teenager about 17 years of age who was capable of walking on his own,” said Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic Nati Haron. “He had sustained light injuries and received first-aid from policemen at the scene. We placed him in an intensive care ambulance and transported him to the hospital while administering additional treatment.”

The police opened an investigation and began widespread searches in pursuit of the two terrorists who escaped the scene. They obtained a photo of one of the suspects at the scene from an advanced security system in the area. Investigators have also been able to make use of objects belonging to the terrorists that were found at the scene.

A police statement said that “the investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are expected soon.”
