Jordanian BDS Relaunches to Fight Cooperative Israel-Jordan Gas Deal

A group of Jordanians seems willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces: following reports that negotiations to import Israeli natural gas were renewed, Jordanian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) activists relaunched their earlier campaign to prevent such cooperation, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The boycott campaign was first launched in September of 2014, when a mutually beneficial $15 billion deal was signed between Israel and Jordan for the sale of gas. Negotiations with American gas company Noble Energy were restarted this week, with an official delegation from the company arriving in Amman Monday to discuss the Israeli-Jordanian gas deal with senior government officials. Jordanian newspaper al-Ghad reported on the meetings.

When details of the secret discussions were exposed, the placard marking the room in which they were taking place, which had read, “Meeting with Noble Energy Mediterranean,” was replaced with a “Vacant” sign, according to the Jordanian news source.

Jordanian BDS supporters launched their new campaign via social media, taking to Twitter with the line, “the enemy’s gas is occupation”. The group also peppered the Jordanian prime minister, minister of planning and international cooperation and minister of foreign affairs with provocative questions, such as “Should we fight the violations of the Zionist entity against Jordan’s natural resources by approving the gas deal?” and “Should we sell the blood of Jordanian prisoners and martyrs and voluntarily finance the military machine from the pocket of the Jordanian citizens and from our electricity bills?”
