How One Young Cancer Patient Gained a New Lease on Life

When 10-year-old Noa was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer two years ago, the prognosis was grim. Today, thanks to a small organization whose only goal is to focus attention on kids in need and funnel donations towards worthy causes, Noa has a chance to beat her cancer.

Since Noa, who is being raised by a single mother, was diagnosed, she has undergone nine brain surgeries and countless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, to little effect. As a last resort, her doctors at Israel’s Tel Hashomer Hospital recommended an alternative treatment, called Keytruda, to rid Noa once and for all of her cancer.

Keytruda is used as an alternative to chemotherapy in fighting against cancerous tumors. While the unique medication has been shown to be effective, the drug comes at an inflated cost and is not covered by the Israel Department of Health Insurance.

Even before Keytruda came into the picture, Noa’s mother, Riki, was already facing a mountain of debt incurred by providing her daughter with the extensive medical care that insurance wouldn’t cover.

Despite Riki’s luck in getting a discount on the Keytruda medication from its manufacturers, Merck Pharmaceutical, each dose of the treatment still costs $2,300. Noa’s doctors have prescribed three doses over the course of 10 treatments, making the final cost $69,000. In order to provide Noa with the full package of Keytruda medicine, a substantial sum is desperately needed.

Enter Friends of Yachdav. Established by Rabbi Binyamin Gottlieb shortly after he and his family were evicted from Gush Katif in 2005, Yachdav’s mission is to help children diagnosed with cancer. More specifically, Yachdav has taken on “projects to help where special needs arise such as lifesaving medication not covered by the health insurance system, financial assistance to families where the parents had to leave their jobs, and emotional assistance,” according to their website.

Recently, Friends of Yachdav launched a crowdfunding campaign on Jewcer to raise the funds Riki needs to pay for Noa’s specialized medical care. The campaign is going very well, but Yachdav knows the mother and daughter are counting on more contributions to ease their financial burden.

After speaking with Noa’s specialist, the chief pediatric oncologist at Tel Hashomer, Yachdav acknowledges the family’s final hope for a full recovery “lies in the Keytruda medication, to strengthen her immune system and fight off the cancer”. The organization stresses that 100 percent of donations go straight to pay for Noa’s treatment.

The Talmud teaches: “Whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he has saved an entire world.” By aiding in the fight to save Noa, all those involved will merit to have saved the lives of an entire generation.
