The Jerusalem District Court issued several life sentences and additional prison time to an Israeli-Arab terrorist who carried out a combined shooting and stabbing attack on a Jerusalem city bus, claiming the lives of three civilians last October.

Bilal Abu Ghanem and Baha Alyan, both 22 years of age from the Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, boarded the 78 bus line in the adjacent neighborhood of Armon Hanatziv and began shooting and stabbing passengers. While Abu Ghanem fled the scene, his accomplice was shot and killed on the bus by Israeli security forces.

Richard Lakin, a 76-year-old American citizen who immigrated to Israel, was shot in the head by Abu Ghanem and stabbed several times. Haviv Haim, 78, and Alon Govberg, 51, were also killed in the attack while dozens more were wounded.

Abu Ghanem, who was later apprehended and then confessed to all allegations, received three consecutive life sentences—one for each murder victim—and an additional 60-year term, which brings the total sentence to 135 years. (A life sentence in Israel is equivalent to 25 years.)

Abu Ghanem was found guilty in June of three counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Interior Minister Aryeh Deri revoked Abu Ghanem’s Israeli citizenship in an executive order following the conviction.

“The assailants in these attacks exploited the freedom of movement throughout Israel that they enjoyed through the possession of Israeli identification cards,” stated Deri. “From now on, the attackers will know that there will be consequences to acts of terrorism beyond prison sentences.”

Additionally, Abu Ghanem will have to financially compensate the families of his murder victims and the other injured civilians.

According to the indictment, Abu Ghanem shot the passengers at close range while Alyan stabbed them repeatedly. After exhausting Abu Ghanem’s ammunition, the two switched weapons, which drew the fire of Israeli security forces onto Alyan and allowed Abu Ghanem to remain unscathed.

According to the Israeli prosecution, Abu Ghanem joined the Hamas terror group’s student wing, Al-Kutla al-Islamiya, in 2013 and decided along with Alyan in 2015 to “murder Jewish bus passengers against the backdrop of battles and debates relating to the Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa mosque.”
