Pandering to Abbas: Where is the Moral Clarity?

It has been reported that both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin have recently called Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to offer condolences on the death of his brother.

Did we hear that right? Is this mere compassion or is it misguided compassion? It’s sad to admit it, but there is a lack of moral clarity in this, and indeed, outright hypocrisy, when our political leadership criticizes weakness in the face of Islamic terror in Europe, yet legitimizes it at home. Would they also have paid a Shiva (condolence) call to Abbas’s predecessor Yasser Arafat, to the Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah, or to any assortment of Islamic terrorist leaders? Why is Abbas different? Is it his tailored suits, as opposed to military garb? Could it be the allure of his trimmed mustache? Has Israel ceased to judge its terrorist enemies by their actions?

Mahmoud Abbas, long-time dictator and corrupt kingpin of the Palestinian Authority, has recently been identified, albeit reluctantly, by Netanyahu as the chief inciter and financier of terrorism emanating from his leadership as head of the PA. So why the condolence calls? Where are the condolences from Abbas for the many hundreds of Israelis who have been killed or wounded under his watch?

While much of the world looks to Israel for a model of strength in the face of increasing Islamic terrorism and political assault, we are failing in that noble task by our own lack of moral clarity. While Abbas himself is one the worst terrorist leaders the world has known, he continues to receive the respect of Israel’s hypocritical leaders.

When terrorism hits Israel again, will we still have the moral right to complain that the leaders of Europe don’t denounce it as terrorism?
