Newly Discovered Clinton Emails Kosher, Confirms FBI

Two days before the election, FBI director James Comey confirmed that a trove of newly discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton did not reveal any evidence warranting a reversal of the Bureau’s previous decision not to indict the Democratic candidate.

After working “around the clock to process and review a large number of emails” in order to resolve the question before Election Day, Comey wrote in a letter to Congress, “Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July.”

Clinton was first cleared by Comey of wrongdoing in her handling of private email servers while serving as secretary of state four months ago. In his verdict, Comey said that while Clinton had been “extremely careless”, any transgressions had been unintentional.

While her opponents disagreed with the FBI’s decision and continued to point to the email investigation as evidence of Clinton’s dishonesty, the hype around it had largely died down by the time Comey sent a letter to Congress on October 30 announcing that the FBI had uncovered possible connections to Clinton during a review of emails related to an investigation into Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal.

The announcement immediately damaged Clinton’s lead over opponent Donald Trump; according to political forecasting site Fivethirtyeight, while Clinton had a 78.8 percent chance of winning the election on October 30, by November 6, her chances had dropped to 64.7 percent.

National polls also showed the race tightening significantly after the vague announcement. Though Clinton maintained a slight edge, hope revived for Trump supporters, who watched a seemingly impassable 11-point spread in Clinton’s favor, according to a mid-October NBC/WSJ poll, shrink to a mere four points by November 6, when Comey made his second announcement.

Comey was severely criticized by both parties and by administration officials when he decided to reveal Clinton’s possible implication in the new investigation eleven days before the election, as the FBI has an unofficial policy not to take actions which could interfere with elections within the last sixty days of a presidential race.

Though the new revelation – or lack thereof – could give Clinton a last-minute boost, it is almost definitely too late for her to regain her significant lead before polling stations open on Tuesday. The race remains extremely close, with America – and the rest of the world – on the edge of its seat.
