Mitt Romney’s “Establishment” Position on Islam and the Mideast

Donald Trump is considering Mitt Romney for the position of secretary of state. This is ironic as Romney embodies the “establishment” position on two critically important topics: Islamic terrorists and Mideast foreign policy. As Robert Spencer already pointed out, it speaks volumes that the “Hamas-linked CAIR leader who called for overthrow of US government [is] thrilled Romney could be Trump’s Secretary of State.”

CAIR is eager to see Romney hold a key position in a Trump presidency because, like all other establishment figures, Romney insists that intolerance, violence, and terrorism committed in the name of Islam has absolutely nothing to do with Islam. After all, “Islam is one of the world’s great religions and the great majority of people in Islam want peace for themselves and peace with their maker,” claims the would-be secretary of state. “They want to raise families and have a bright future.” As for all those other Muslims who believe that all those Koran verses and statements from Muhammad mean what they say—mean that Muslims should terrorize and subjugate infidels—they have nothing to do with Islam for Romney.

Moreover, based on comments he made during the 2012 presidential election, when he was the failed Republican candidate, Romney would’ve be a greater supporter than Obama of the Syrian “rebels” (i.e., Islamic terrorists) who are fighting against Assad. In other words, as secretary of state, he would likely push for those very same policies that many, including Trump, have criticized for creating ISIS (which just so happens to be entrenched in all those lands that U.S. leadership supported “freedom fighters,” including Iraq, Libya, and Syria).

In short, if Trump is serious about “draining the swamp,” he needs to understand that Romney represents everything wrong with the establishment, especially U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and U.S. domestic policy concerning Islamic terrorism—a policy that will continue to try to distance Islamic jihad from Islam.
