Vice President Mike Pence visited the Jewish cemetery near St. Louis, Mo., Wednesday to pitch in on efforts to repair more than 170 tombstones that were damaged by vandals.

During his visit, Pence stressed that the Trump administration will not tolerate anti-Semitism and is committed to fighting bigotry and hatred.

“You have inspired this nation,” Pence told volunteers. “There’s no place in America for hatred or acts of prejudice or violence or anti-Semitism. I must tell you the people in Missouri are inspiring the nation by your love and care for this place, for the Jewish community in Missouri. And I want to thank you for that inspiration, for showing the world what America is all about.”

Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who is Jewish, invited Pence to the Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery in University City, Mo. Greitens has called the vandalism a “senseless act of desecration” and has helped organize volunteer cleanup efforts.

Meanwhile, in a display of interfaith unity, a fundraiser started online by Muslim Americans has raised more than $115,000 to help with the cemetery repair efforts. The campaign was organized by Linda Sarsour of MPower Change and Tarek El-Messidi of CelebrateMercy.
