For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore I command thee, saying: ‘Thou shalt surely open thy hand unto thy poor and needy brother, in thy land.’ DEUTERONOMY 15:11 (The Israel Bible™)

‘Lekhem’, (לחם) bread, is the root of the word ‘milkhama’ (מלחמה) or war. According to Rabbi Benjamin Blech, people go to war not because they are wicked, but rather because they are deprived of basic necessities such as bread. If we take care of our brothers and sisters who are needy and provide for those who are hungry, we will be one step closer to bringing peace to the world.
